ALL SPPG Spring Term 1 courses at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota will meet online starting January 3, 2022. For the most recent information, visit the official page for COVID-19 Updates.

Remote Learning Resources for Students

This page will change and evolve as we add more information. New additions since its initial launch will be added in bold.

A variety of circumstances may take your classes online with little notice. In that event, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota has prepared the following resources to help you continue your learning and being present in courses throughout the circumstance. Please take the time to review the tabs below.

Please note that Saint Mary’s expects all students to follow rules of “Netiquette” in online courses. Please see this document for those expectations.

This tab covers things you can do right now to prepare for continuing your classes in case of an emergency. The other tabs provide information and expectations of you regarding class attendance, online delivery of your courses, and helpful resources.

Expectations

The University asks that students take the following steps as soon as possible:

  • Be familiar with SMU’s COVID-19 response website and the Remote Learning Guidelines on this site.
  • Ensure the University has your up to date emergency contact information in the Student Portal. To view or update your information, log in to the student portal, My Profile (on the upper right hand side). Update your Phone, Address and Emergency Contact information.
  • Complete the preparedness checklist below.

Preparedness Checklist

  • Make sure you have a device, other than your mobile phone to complete online course work. You will need access to a device (laptop, desktop computer, or iPad) with a camera and microphone.

In the event courses cannot be held in-person, Saint Mary’s is committed to helping students continue and complete classes through online learning with as little impact as possible to your educational plans. Faculty will be in communication with you regarding the online delivery method (synchronous versus asynchronous) and expectations of you in online courses. Some courses will be more difficult to emulate online – make sure to communicate with your faculty in those courses.

Expectations

  • If one or more Saint Mary’s locations cannot hold classes in-person due to an emergency for a prolonged period of time, stay in communication with your instructors regarding the online delivery method of your courses.
  • Online courses may be challenging for you and your faculty. No one expects parity between emergency online learning and face-to-face learning, but we expect you to do the best you can to follow the instructions of your instructor and use the resources provided.
  • Saint Mary’s expects all students to follow rules of “Netiquette” in online courses. Please see this document for those expectations.
  • If you have not had a course that uses Canvas yet, become familiar with Canvas: where to find your course syllabus, assignments, submitting assignments, course announcements, and discussion boards.
  • Click here to access a variety of support features to assist your usage of Canvas.
  • When logged into Canvas look for Pick Up and Play – this is a self paced tutorial.

Possible Substitute for Class Meetings

  • Classes may meet virtually over Zoom, at the current meeting time, to hold online synchronous classes and office hours. In Zoom you can see your classmates and instructor, share your computer screen, participate in a live chat, and participate in small group discussions. Zoom also works over just a regular phone line without video if you do not have the data or bandwidth for video.
  • Class instructors may have you watch a recorded presentation or a narrated PowerPoint. Here is a link on How to View a Live Webcast Session.
  • Class instructors may host phone-based audio conferences.
  • For labs, instructors may hold virtual labs online or provide alternative activities in place of the lab.
  • You may have readings or online materials followed-up with an online discussion in place of class time.

Submitting Your Course Work

Make sure you are in communication with each of your faculty so that you know how they want you to submit course work. Instructors will have the ability to provide extended time for students with accommodations for assignments and exams online.
