Introduction

The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching is launching new asynchronous training experiences on teaching in the context of modern AI. Grounded in our position statement’s emphasis on human dignity and flourishing, this series invites participants to develop the practical wisdom needed to engage AI responsibly within their disciplines and in service to the common good.

The first asynchronous experience is the AI Literacy pathway. Through a guided Gemini Notebook learning experience, participants engage curated sources to understand the fundamentals of modern AI, evaluate AI outputs, and discern appropriate use of emerging technologies. The pathway concludes with the development of a discipline-specific AI literacy framework.

Learning Outcomes

1. Describe modern artificial intelligence in a way that is both embedded in your discipline and accessible to students
2. Evaluate generative AI outputs for accuracy, completeness, and ethical implications
3. Distinguish between appropriate, inappropriate, and context-dependent use of AI for both experts and novice learners within your discipline
4. Design an AI Literacy Framework that is embedded in the ethical principles of your discipline and oriented toward promoting the common good and human flourishing.
