Student Voice Matters!

We are excited to share with you some of the details for this year’s Summer Teaching and Learning Series! Right now, in all areas of education, the importance of creating space for courageous conversations and amplifying student voices for their own learning are hot topics that are not cooling down anytime soon. We want to be on the cutting edge of this important and timely exploration. That is why this year’s theme for our Teaching and Learning Series is Awaken, Nurture and Empower Student Voice for Learning.

The SGPP Faculty Development Committee in partnership with the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) is looking forward to hosting this special event online.

Virtual Kick-off Information and Registration

Virtual Spring Kick-off Event

Saturday, May 6, 2023

9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Online via Zoom

Regardless of the type of professional program and modality, we have noticed students who are supported to use their voice and choice in the classroom are proactive learners, take initiative to explore new concepts, are often more resilient through failure, and more collaborative with peers? Through the lens of student voice, this spring “kick-off” event will focus on defining student voice, why it is important, hear perspectives of using discussions in class, and techniques that will help you balance eliciting individual and collective student perspectives in your teaching practice. Join your colleagues in learning how and why student voice matters and how to empower it both in online and in person learning!

Student voice is the active input of students’ values, beliefs, thoughts, experiences, and perspectives into the classroom though instructional approaches and techniques that invite and allow for students to share themselves as a way of learning by association with, from, and for one another. During this workshop, we will ground our exploration in the Lasallian Virtues of generosity, gravity, and wisdom. Participants will continue to explore practices and strategies that will invite and engage all voices, especially those who need more time to think and process information.
